3 Months Old: Getting to Know Baby E.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our first three months of getting acquainted with our baby E. Those months always go very quickly because you are pouring so much time into someone else, and you just don't realize where that time goes until you have a little chunkster staring cutely back at you, instead of the skinny newborn you brought home a few months earlier.

Our little man has Mommy's furrowed brow look, down to perfection already. It is a look that is there when visually studying something, or while deep in concentration, and even though it looks very serious, it can be there even when everything is going along just swimmingly.

That being said, Baby E. is a very serious baby. It takes a lot of silly faces and funny noises to get him to give us a smile. He only smiles once or twice a day, so it makes you feel like a million bucks when you are successful in making him show his gummy grin.

The older brothers very much claim Baby E. as their own. J. likes to rub E. on the head when he cries. Although sometimes the crying is a result of J. laying completely on top of E., before I can stop him from doing so.  J. loves E. so much, he just wants to be close to him! All in all, J. is turning out to be a pretty good big brother.

S. still tries to hold Baby E., but now that E. is over half of S.'s weight, it's a little more cumbersome to do. S. is a wonderful big brother too. He tells me when E. is crying, saying, "Him crying" in the sweetest voice. I love the way S. talks.

Nick is a huge part of E.'s life (as well as the other boys, of course), and always spends time in the evenings after work holding him, bottle feeding occasionally, and changing diapers, everything that a good dad can do for his infant son. It's a beautiful thing seeing Daddy and son relaxing together on the couch at the end of the day.

E. is doing all the normal things a 3 month old should, holding his head up, spending a balanced amount of time between sleeping and being awake, following objects or people with his eyes, and my favorite one - not pooping in every diaper the way babies do for the first two months. Those diaper changes get old fast.

E. was able to experience snow for the first time, this month. We had two snowfalls, and though we didn't get to enjoy the first snow because S. and J. were sick, we did manage to get out after the second snowstorm and took the boys sledding. It was a family affair, with everyone bundled up. We weren't out for very long, but it was still a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, E. caught the cold the rest of us have been sharing, so he's been a bit sniffly for a little over a week now. But it's all in his head, and not in his chest, so E. should be getting over the cold soon.

W e're in the middle of sleep training E. right now. He's discovered how nice it is to fall asleep while nursing or while being held. While we enjoy those moments with him, we don't want E. to become dependent on those actions to induce sleep. We've had to sleep train all of our boys. When they get to this stage, we start putting them to bed when they are sleepy, but slightly awake still, so they can learn to fall asleep on their own. This has huge payoffs down the road, as S. and J. go to bed without a peep now, and E. will one day follow suit.

Baby E. has been such an easy baby. The adjustment from 2 kids, to 3 kids has been a fairly smooth transition becuse of E.'s calm temperament. Even though he is so serious, he's very content unless he is tired, hungry, or has a messy diaper.

We are very glad to have Baby E. in our life. He just delights us, same as his brothers do. These babies are so precious, and grow up quickly. We are very privileged to be their guardians, guides, and hopefully one day, their friends, in life until they are adults making decisions for themselves. What a terrific responsibility. God give us the wisdom and strength to do the job right by them.
